Expolanka Honoured at ACCA Awards 2014

“Engaging in sustainable business is beneficial to a company because it leverages on business competencies to address social issues, involves one-time investment with sustainable results, and produces other positive effects such as social motivation and improved sustainable culture.” – Muhammad Yunus.

Expolanka Holdings emerged runners up at the recently held ACCA Sri Lanka Sustainability Awards in the Diversified Conglomerate Category, presented by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants Sri Lanka Liaison Office. Out of over 80 submissions to each category 14 companies won awards at this year’s ceremony. Expolanka won this award for the second consecutive year, as the Group received the same recognition at the 2013 Awards ceremony last year.

The ACCA Sri Lanka Sustainability Reporting Awards honours businesses for their commitment to transparent reporting and disclosure of their environmental, social and full sustainability information. Businesses that use sustainability reporting as a tool to measure, monitor, and report its operations and the impact such operations have towards the business’ stakeholders are recognized at the Awards. This year’s Award ceremony marked a significant milestone, as it was conducted for the tenth year running.

The criteria for selecting the winners include practices connected to sustainable development, its impacts, adheration to GRI4 guidelines, publicized key performance indicators accompanied by measured results and external benchmarks.

Expolanka’s Annual Report for 2013/2014 highlighted the Group’s overall approach to sustainability, presenting precise and factual evidence for the company’s operations. The report was formulated based on the principles and reporting guidelines of International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC) & Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).

The report, reviewed by independent auditors, offers a clear image of the company’s economic, environmental and social impact to its internal and external stakeholders and the Group’s policies and goals in achieving sustainable development. Thus far, the report showcased Expolanka’s sustainability activities in accordance to the ‘Core’ option under GRI guidelines, and the company looks forward upgrading to the ‘Comprehensive’ option in the upcoming years. The core option relates to basic reporting, while comprehensive covers the whole spectrum of the company’s operations.

Expolanka’s focus on sustainable activities goes beyond its daily business operations. A number of CSR projects carried out by the company have been focused on creating a sustainable environment among societies. Expolanka’s Hiniduma project focused on creating a biodiversity corridor between Sri Lanka’s largest undisturbed rainforests – Sinharaja and Kanneliya, while the company has worked on promoting water conservation to mark the World Water Day.

Paddy Weerasekera, the Head of Marketing, Corporate Communications and CSR at Expolanka Holdings, spoke of the extent to which sustainability is part of the company’s operations.

“Sustainability is part and parcel of all our business endeavours. We are just as committed to transparent disclosure which led us to adhere to the GRI4 guidelines in reporting our sustainability strategy and practices.”

He also highlighted the strategic pathway Expolanka follows in terms of sustainability.

“Our sustainability strategy covers a wide range of areas including environmental impact, social responsibility, IT governance and human capital development. This award is an honour and a tribute to our sincere efforts.”
