Expolanka at the Standard Chartered Liverpool Trophy

“Sports serve society by providing vivid examples of excellence.”– George F. Will

Expolanka’s football team has qualified to compete at the Standard Chartered Liverpool Trophy 2015, scheduled to be held at Liverpool in March 2015. The tournament will feature ten of the top futsal teams from around the world; teams that have emerged as champions at the regional futsal tournaments conducted by Standard Chartered Bank.

The footballers of Expolanka first took part in the regional futsal tournament held in Mumbai, where they competed with State teams from India, and emerged victorious at the finals. Expolanka was the only Sri Lankan team to participate in that tournament, and ultimately became the South Asian champions, maintaining an unbeaten run in all of its games.

Looking back at this recently concluded event, Aabid, a member of the victorious squad, commented on the success the ‘Expolanka Sri Lanka’ team enjoyed during the tournament.

“We were up against some tough challenges from the Indian teams, and they made us work hard. Our collective effort and teamwork helped us beat Chennai, Delhi and Kolkata in the preliminary stages, and eventually beat Delhi convincingly at the finals. Our hard work paid off, and we’re glad that we’ve been able to bring glory to our country.”

Aabid and his team’s thirst for glory has not receded, as they now prepare to travel to England to compete in the Final Round of the trophy. All the games will be held at the historic Anfield Stadium, which is home to the Liverpool Football Club. Teams from around the world will join Expolanka to compete for the Standard Chartered Liverpool Trophy 2015.

“We will get the opportunity to train and prepare for the tournament with the members of the Liverpool Premier League team. Their knowledge and experience would not only help our quest for the trophy, but also inspire us in our sporting careers. All of us at the Expolanka team is looking forward to this once in a lifetime experience.”

Football is nothing new to Expolanka Holdings. The footballers of the company have in the past emerged as Champions at the Division ‘A’ Football League, which is organized by the Mercantile Football Federation of Sri Lanka. At another occasion, Shazny Mohamed, who is a prominent member of the squad, was selected as a ‘rising star’ and was given the opportunity to train at Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium back in 2012.

The footballers train each week, and have prepared for the futsal tournament in a specialized futsal court.

“We take part in practice sessions three times a week, and we have qualified coaches from Expolanka to support us and show us the way. For this futsal tournament, we practiced at a futsal court in order to get accustomed to the miniature version of the sport.”

Preparations are underway for the tournament at Anfield, and all teams are heading their way to the UK. Aabid did not forget to mention about the support that Expolanka Holdings has offered throughout their journey thus far.

“When first planning to take part in the tournament, we never thought we could come such a long way. The enormous support offered to us by mother Expolanka has played a crucial role in what the team has become today. The immense confidence shown by our company and the colleagues has inspired us to give it our best, and we hope to bring glory to Sri Lanka.”

Expolanka Holdings wishes the football team all the very best.
