Expolanka Toastmasters – Creating a legacy of leadership

Words have incredible power. They can make people’s hearts soar, or they can make people’s hearts sore” - Dr. Mardy Grothe

“We learn in moments of enjoyment,” are the words of Dr. Ralph C. Smedley, who founded the first Toastmasters club at the YMCA in Santa Ana, Calif., 90 years ago. Dr. Smedley created the club in October 1924 for young men to practice their after-dinner speeches in a social environment. Today, nearly 300,000 men and women are improving their communication and leadership skills using the values and model that Dr. Smedley developed. In fact, there are more than 13,500 clubs in 116 countries throughout the world.

Expolanka also boasts of a vibrant Toastmasters Club and the third installation ceremony was held on the 5th of August at the Learning Center, Expo Holdings. The history of the Expolanka Toastmasters club dates back to 2010 when it joined the Colombo Toastmasters to hold a speechcraft program; this was followed by a similar program in 2011. In January 2012, Expolanka Toastmasters Club was officially formed and chartered under District 82.

During the two years of its existence, Expolanka Toastmasters have amassed a number of awards. It has won 4 competent communicator awards, 2 competent leader awards and an advanced communicator gold award.  This year, the club also won the prestigious Golden Gavel Plus Award at the annual Toastmasters Ovation in Goa, India. The award – the highest achievement a Toastmaster club can earn – is presented to a club that has completed 22 specific goals set by the Toastmasters District 82 in committing to effective communication and leadership practices.

The third installation ceremony was a gala affair and at it TM Suhitha Karunanayake took over the reins from TM Scerena Janson as the President for the year 2014/15. Expolanka Group CEO Hanif Yusoof participated as the Chief Guest while District Governor DTM Yoosuf Jevunjee addressed the gathering as the keynote speaker.

The new committee was unveiled as follows,

  • TM Zafrana Nafees                 VP-Education
  • TM Sajeeth Iliyas                     VP-Membership
  • TM Darren Pullenayagem VP-Public Relations
  • TM Haaziq Jaleel                     Secretary
  • TM Hisham Yasir                     Treasurer
  •  TM Ihsan Fareed                     Sergeant at Arms

During the awards presentation that followed, Zaidh Naushad won the Expolanka Toastmaster of the Year award.  Toastmasters who completed the Competent Communicator and Competent Leadership projects received their awards of appreciation and recognition from Chief Guest Hanif Yusoof and District Governor DTM Yoosuf Jevunjee.

Learning to give a speech is important, but almost equally so is learning to listen critically, analytically, and then to give the speaker the benefit.  Expolanka Toastmasters is proud of what it has achieved during the past few years. The club has fostered friendship, encouraged Expolankians in their quest for excellence and given members a vital boost in their search for confidence in public speaking. Our members have learnt to think on their feet, host an event, speak concisely and add humour to their public speaking engagements. Most importantly, the club has succeeded in creating a legacy of leadership.
