Expo Shuttlers Tournament 2014

“Success is where preparation and opportunity meet”. – Bobby Unser

A person stepping into the St.Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia on the 30th August 2014 would have been greeted by a rapturous noise. He would have heard the victorious chants of triumph and the despairing groans of defeat. The cries of ‘Go Expo Go’ would have resounded throughout the school and closer examination would have revealed that he was in the presence of the Expo Shuttlers Tournament.

Sport is a crucial cog in the psyche of the Expolanka conglomerate. Expolankians take part in football, cricket, rugby, badminton, swimming and basketball. The players are coached by either professional coaches or by employees who have participated in that sport at the national level. In the past two decades, Expolanka’s sporting stars have won countless accolades for the company.

Badminton is a popular sport at Expolanka. At high levels of play, the sport demands excellent fitness and players require aerobic stamina, agility, explosive strength, speed and precision. Every year we hold an inter-company badminton tournament which is named as the Expo Shuttlers Tournament. This year the tournament was held for the fourth consecutive time.

The tournament was a great success. 16 men’s teams and 4 women’s teams from 10 Expolanka companies participated.  EFL Fashion grabbed the Championship following an eventful battle with the runners-up Classic Travel.  Umesh Abeywickrama of EFL Fashion walked away with the Men’s Best Single Player trophy while Anupamali Perera of EFL Fashion won the Women’s Best Single Player trophy. In the Double Players category, Naushad Mohammad and Priyantha Pushpika of EFL Fashion claimed the men’s title while Roshelle Reiss and Thilini Perera of EFL Fashion took the women’s title. The winners were awarded trophies as well as gold medals. The matches were refereed by professional referees from the Sri Lanka Badminton Association.

The President of Expo Sports, Aabid Akram was delighted with the success of the tournament.

“It was a well-fought competition and the enthusiasm of the players and the supporters alike created a wonderful atmosphere. Expo Shuttlers always gives a boost to badminton at Expolanka and many new players join our squad after the tournament. Intercompany events are also a great opportunity for Expolankians to socialize and meet new people. New friendships are always borne out of these events. The whole event was a pleasure to witness”.

At Expolanka, we know that sport, more than any other medium, has the ability to break down barriers, unite people and create brotherhood. Whenever a sporting tournament is held, spectators throng the arena. It is amazing to witness the level of support that our sporting teams elicit. The mission of Expo Sports is to unite all expolankians through sport and create one team, one company and one spirit. The Expo Shuttlers tournament is a prime example that Expo Sports is successfully achieving its mission.
