Expolanka – Champions at Mercantile Division ‘A’ Football League

Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships – Michael Jordan.

Expolanka’s vision of using sport as a tool to build a sense of community and teamwork within the company has helped them achieve yet another milestone.

Expolanka Holdings became Champions at the Mercantile ‘A’ Division Football League 2013 for the third year in a row. The League, organized by the Mercantile Football Federation of Sri Lanka, featured top level football teams of leading co-operates in the island.

The ‘A’ Division comprised of teams from Amana Takaful and LB Finance, and Expolanka managed to beat both teams convincingly – 1-0 against Amana and 3-0 against LB Finance – on the way to retaining the title.

According to Aabid Akram, a member of the victorious team, who is also the President of Expo Sports, the eighteen member squad consisted of employees from various member companies of Expolanka Holdings.

“Our squad is composed of players from various companies belonging to the Expolanka Group. The Expolanka team on display at the League showcased the identity of all such companies, whilst also contributing to the brand and reputation of the mother company.”

The team was formed after an initial selection camp was held for those who were interested in joining the squad. The selected members then trained and honed their skills during three months of preparation, under the guidance of a former national coach, who is currently the football coach at Zahira College, Colombo.

This win consolidates Expolanka’s position as a leading football team in the corporate arena, having won the tournament beating Amana Group in 2012 and Hatton National Bank in 2011.

Being a part of a football team and taking part in a major tournament has helped the players to not only gather vital lessons of dedication, planning and teamwork for their work life, but also make their careers at Expolanka a fuller and more rounded experience. The players also had the luxury of getting to know and building relationships with other members of the Expolanka family, says Aabid.

“Taking part in the League gave us the opportunity to learn more about our colleagues and build friendships, which would not have been possible otherwise.”

Aabid added that the team’s next focus was the Knockout Football Tournament, which is expected to be held soon.
