Expolanka’s Sustainability Initiatives lauded at ACCA awards

“Sustainability is when what is good for a company is also good for the planet. It means creating more wealth than we destroy. Sustainable firms are those doing the best job at creating net wealth–economic, social, and ecological–as compared to their peers”.  – Toby Heaps (Corporate Knights)

Expolanka Holdings is built on relationships – relationships with our customers, partners, investors, employees and the communities in which we live and work. Contributing to the social welfare of our communities is a vital part of Expolanka’s work ethic.

Over the years, sustainability and corporate responsibility have become embedded in the core of our strategy and operations. We have evolved to become a company that operates in an environmentally responsible way and to this end we have undertaken many ventures that have made a positive impact on the society.

Recently our efforts were recognized when Expolanka won the runners up award in the Diversified Organizations sector at the annual ACCA Sri Lanka Sustainability Reporting Awards. This award is presented by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Sri Lanka Liaison Office. It is based on the concept that businesses perform better by using sustainability reporting as a tool to measure, monitor and report their actions and the impacts those actions have on stakeholders. The ACCA Sri Lanka Sustainability Reporting Awards has gained immense momentum since its inception nine years ago.

Expolanka’s sustainability report describes the Group’s approach to sustainability in a clear and concise manner outlining policies, targets and long term objectives. The award winning report was written using GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) in line with the global sustainability reporting framework.

Some of our Key Sustainability Initiatives

1.       Expolanka Hiniduma Project

As part of our fight against the threat of deforestation, Expolanka joined the Hiniduma Tree Planting Initiative with the Carbon Consulting Company (CCC) and the Rainforest Rescue International (RRI). This initiative seeks to set up a biodiversity corridor between the country’s largest undisturbed rainforests – Sinharaja and Kanneliya- and to set up buffer zones around the forest edges using the ‘Analog Forestry’ concept.

2.         Expo Freight certified as CarbonNeutral®

At Expolanka, we take the threat of global warming seriously and over the years have taken steps to mitigate the Carbon Footprint of our companies. In May 2012, Expolanka Freight (EFL) became Sri Lanka’s first-ever CarbonNeutral® Freight & Logistics Company when it was awarded the CarbonNeutral® Certification. EFL achieved the certification after it conducted a Carbon Footprint calculation and then neutralized it by purchasing the necessary carbon offsets.

3.         Promoting the conservation of water

Expolanka Holdings PLC worked in partnership with the UNDP and other volunteers in organizing the events that were held in commemoration of World Water Day 2013. This included a corporate sector workshop to improve the understanding of water quantity and quality issues, laying the foundation for a biogas facility as a way to process solid waste and wastewater and an awareness campaign to educate people on waste, water and health.

4.       Observing Earth Hour

The ‘green concept’ of doing business has been inherent in Expolanka’s world since the beginning; and for the past few years Expolanka has taken the lead in promoting the Earth Hour initiative in Sri Lanka.  In 2010, employees of the 18 companies of Expolanka Holdings Group came together for the first time to join millions around the world to observe Earth Hour. In 2012, Expolanka hosted an awareness campaign to educate students about Earth Hour and in 2013 we launched a Facebook application of ‘I Will if You Will,’ a challenge to people requesting them to ‘Go beyond the Hour’ and do something for the environment.

Expolanka seeks to be a leader in enhancing the long term sustainability of the communities it serves. Our CSR practices are integrated throughout our business operations with the intention of delivering social, economic and environmental benefits to our employees, communities and other stakeholders. We strive to show that a company can harness its business model to make the world a better place and it is our hope that other companies will follow our example.
