“Quality is more important than quantity. One home run is much better than two doubles.” – Steve Jobs

L_1424.tmpBusinesses achieve success not only by bringing innovative ideas to the market but by continuous excellence in customer service. Yet a focus on superior execution is easier said than done. Every business strives to provide quality products, quality services, quality talent and quality client service. Unfortunately, only a few succeed.

Over the last three decades Expo Freight (EFL) has established itself as a premier provider of quality freight forwarding and supply chain management solutions. The company has continued to prove year after year that it ranks among the best freight services in the world. The National Chamber of Exporters, The World Brand Congress, the SLIM Brand Excellence awards and a host of other stellar bodies bear witness to this fact.

Recently Expolanka Freight received another feather to its cap when it was awarded the ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management Systems certification from SGS United Kingdom. The certification covers all the international transportation and logistics services provided by EFL including sea, air and land transportation, customs house brokerage and customs bonded warehousing.  L_E1A5.tmp

The ISO 9001:2008 certification is an international standard that defines good management practices. They ensure that products and services are safe, reliable and of good quality. They help companies to access new markets, level the playing field for developing countries and facilitate free and fair global trade.

ISO 9001:2008 is based on eight quality management principles,

  • Customer focus: organizations depend on their customers, and therefore need to shape activities around the fulfilment of market need
  • Leadership: is needed to provide unity of purpose and direction
  • Involvement of people: creates an environment where people become fully involved in achieving the organization’s objectives
  • Process approach: to achieve organizational objectives, resources and activities need to be managed as processes, with an understanding of how the outputs of one process affects the inputs of another
  • System approach to management: the effectiveness and efficiency of the organization depends on a systemized approach to work activities
  • Continual improvement: adopting this as a part of everyday culture is a key objective for an organization
  • Fact based decision-making: effective decisions are based on the logical and intuitive analysis of factual information
  • Mutually beneficial supplier relationships: such relationships enhances the ability of an organization to create value

In order to receive this certification, Expo Freight had to undergo a thorough audit and examination of the various systems related to processing and managing customer orders, supplier and customer relationships, inventory and order fulfillment, as well as internal systems related to employee involvement and corporate data management.

We asked the CEO of Expolanka Freight Mr. Jagath Pathirana to comment on this honour bestowed to EFL,

“As the leading freight forwarder in Sri Lanka we continue to raise the industry bar with our commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. Our quest is to add value to all the inputs that we have in our business by simplifying the complex. Our main objective in conforming to the ISO 9001:2008 quality management system standard is to streamline our business processes and adapt to the ever-changing world of freight forwarding”, Mr. Pathirana said.

“Standardization of our processes and systems has been a key focus area within our strategy to achieve excellence. Continuous improvement & business process re-engineering will challenge what is considered as the norm and foster innovation. With this ISO certification we have proven that EFL measures its success by quality as well as quantity” Mr. Pathirana concluded.
