Expolanka Freight Recertified as Carbon Neutral

“We’re running the most dangerous experiment in history right now, which is to see how much carbon dioxide the atmosphere can handle before there is an environmental catastrophe”- Elon Musk

A scary picture

Recently, a group of eminent scientists representing the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned that if people continue to emit greenhouse gases at current rates, the accumulation of carbon in the atmosphere could mean that the world will face rising sea levels, heat waves, droughts and more extreme weather in less than two decades.

The panel also found it was “unequivocal” that global warming was happening as a result of human actions and that without “substantial and sustained” reductions in greenhouse gas emissions we will breach the symbolic threshold of 2C of warming, which governments around the world have pledged not to do.

Meanwhile, the widely quoted Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change concluded that failure to act on climate change will cost the world the equivalent of 5% of GDP a year, rising as high as 20% of GDP if a wider range of risks are incorporated.

Expo takes steps to mitigate carbon footprint

At Expolanka, we take the threat of global warming seriously and over the years have taken steps to mitigate the Carbon Footprint of our companies. Among our notable CSR activities in the past couple of years, was a global warming awareness programme, an Earth Hour awareness programme, a conserving energy project conducted in all Expo companies and a project to combat air pollution with natural filters.

EFL first CarbonNeutral Freight and Logistics company in Sri Lanka

In May 2012, Expolanka Freight (EFL) became Sri Lanka’s first-ever CarbonNeutral® Freight & Logistics Company when it was awarded the CarbonNeutral® Certification. EFL achieved the certification after it conducted a Carbon Footprint calculation and then neutralized it by purchasing the necessary carbon offsets. All the offsets that were sourced were selected, contracted, transacted, verified and retired in accordance with the requirements laid out in the Carbonneutral protocol.

Recently, Expolanka Freight was recertified as Carbon Neutral for the year 2013/14 by the Carbon Consulting Company (CCC). According to the assessment report by CCC, EFL only recorded an 8.28% increase in the overall footprint in comparison to the previous year despite an overall increase of 21.7% in the company’s total mileage.

The company also achieved last year’s target implementing mechanism to reduce the internal footprint by 10%.  The report further indicated that there were significant reductions in Expo Freight (EFL)’s key performance indicators with respect to emission mitigation. The company’s ‘footprint per unit distance’ recorded a reduction of 11 percent while the ‘footprint per full time equivalent employee’ indicated a drop of 19 percent.

Commenting on the achievement, EFL CEO Jagath Pathirane said:

“We’re very proud to be recertified as a CarbonNeutral company. We do feel a sense of achievement as this re-affirms our position both as a trailblazer in the Sri Lankan transport sector and as a leading freight forwarding force in Asia.”

“Social responsibility does take top billing in our operations as we contribute to reducing global warming and taking a lead in living and doing business by example and concern for the environment”, he added.

The events that led up to the economic recession in 2008 and 2009 have placed a renewed emphasis on business ethics. In hindsight many have declared that the financial crisis could have been prevented if corporates had conducted their activities in an ethical manner. Today, the world is on the brink of an even greater catastrophe. If the world does not wake up and take measures to reduce carbon emissions the next generation will face environmental problems of epic proportions.

We Expolankians are happy to show the way and it is our desire that other corporates and society bodies will be inspired by our example and take steps to protect the environment in whatever way they can.
