Out of the box and onto the gold

arcEveryone knows how to read an annual report. You skip the glossy pages which feature smiling employees and the bland prose which heap praise upon praise on the top management. In fact, experienced readers will turn to the rows of numbers in the back and start with the footnotes.

Preparing an engaging and compelling annual report is not a cakewalk. It requires months of preparation, heaps of creativity, a strong eye for detail, and a lot of patience.

When Expolanka Holdings embarked on producing their annual report for 2012/13, they chose to reaffirm their signature style and create a unique and daring report. After a lengthy brainstorming session, the team came up with the idea of an “Out of the box” theme which highlights Expolanka’s ‘Dare to do spirit”. The outcome was a report that exceeded everyone’s expectations and one that ended up garnering international acclaim.  At the 27th ARC Awards held in New York City on the 7th of August 2013, Expolanka bagged the gold award in the non-traditional annual report category for conglomerates and another gold award for printing and production.

Paddy Weerasekara, who is the head of marketing, corporate communications and CSR at Expolanka Holdings PLC, said that the report highlights the fact that Expolanka is not an ordinary company.

“We wanted to create something that conveys to our stakeholders that they are working with a company that is not afraid to stand out; a company that has a proud history of entrepreneurship and a company with a ‘Dare to do spirit”. We designed the annual report in the shape of a box with the four flaps opening in different directions signifying that we think out of the box. The flaps represent the four sectors of Expolanka, namely freight and logistics, international trading and manufacturing, travel and leisure and investments and service”, he said.

The designing of the annual report was undertaken by Copyline (Pvt) Limited, which bills itself as a specialist producer of quality annual reports. We spoke to Mahesh Senadheera, the creative director of Copyline, and asked his views regarding the project.

“The Expolanka annual report was a unique assignment. Designing the report to look and open like a box was a challenge and we were thrilled when it came out so well. Expolanka engages in a variety of CSR programs and the company is renowned for being environmentally friendly. We chose ‘earthy colours’ such as brown, green and light blue to signify this aspect. The report was also printed on recycled paper. The hue of the inside pages is a light brownish colour and these pages are adorned with eye catching designs. We wanted to keep the layout as simple as possible and the finished product is very reader friendly”, Mr. Senadheera said.

As mentioned above, the annual report also won the gold award in the printing and production category. The printing was undertaken by Gunaratne Offset, a global leader that specializes in printing brochures, books etc. We spoke to Mr. Gunendra Douglas who is the marketing and planning executive at Gunaratna Offset.

“It took us nearly 10 days to print the report. This was the first time that we had to print a report in the shape of a box. After the printing, the binding and putting it together was a difficult task but we were able to complete it successfully. All of us were overjoyed when we heard that Expolanka had won two gold awards at the ARC awards and we salute them for embarking on such an ambitious project”, Mr. Douglas said.

This is not the first time that Expolanka has received acclaim at the ARC awards. Last year, the company, walked away with the best of category grand award, as well as the gold awards in the most environmentally sound and the non-traditional annual report categories.

We asked Mr. Paddy Weerasekara about his views regarding Expolanka winning the ARC awards in consecutive years.

“We are elated to win these prestigious international awards for the second time running.  These awards show that we have been successful in capturing the essence of our company in our annual reports. They show that we are projecting ourselves as a company that does business with a dare to do spirit and that we are not bound by conventions”. Mr. Weerasekara replied.
