Paan Paan – Simply Good Bread

For more than 5000 years, bread has satisfied the hunger pangs of millions of humans. The loaf of bread is ubiquitous, consumed in almost every society and has become such an integral part of humanity that the phrase, ‘daily bread’ symbolizes the essentials of life.

Paan Paan, the latest specialty bread shop in Sri Lanka, seeks to give a new twist to an old food. The proprietors at Paan Paan are bread experts. They literally eat, breath and live bread. Paan Paan has filled a void in the Sri Lankan bread industry. The shop gives Sri Lankans the opportunity to savour high quality bread products manufactured according to international standards.

Paan Paan is the brainchild of Lanka Premier Foods, which is a subsidiary of Expolanka Holdings.  The CEO of Lanka Premier Foods, Aboo Yusoof says,

“We saw that there was a dearth in the market for a variety of breads and we thought that this was the time to provide customers a little more variety keeping in mind good health and serving them the best in quality and value for money. Specialty breads are not that popular in Sri Lanka. We opened Paan Paan with the hope that we can reach out to a wider market and be the market leader in specialty breads”.

Paan Paan is located in a serene environment at No 84, Lorenz Road, Colombo 4. The smell of the freshly baked bread products has transformed the area into an array of delicious aromas. The breads are a wonderful sight for the eyes. The bread range includes French baguettes, Focaccia, Ciabatta, Bartusa, Herb bread and many others.

The specialty breads are from a variety of countries. The Spanish Bartusa bread is made with a touch of black pepper, topped with cheese, bell pepper and black olives while the Italian Focaccia is made with butter, olive oil, eggs, garlic, rosemary and olives. The globally popular French Baguette has a distinct and unique Paan Paan flavour.

For people with a sweet tooth, Paan Paan offers an enjoyable selection of muffins. The orange and poppy seed muffin, rich chocolate chip muffin and the blueberry muffin which is made with Belgian blueberries – a mouthwatering treat.

The health conscious can choose between the multi seed low GI bread, which is a delectable mix of pumpkin seeds linseeds, sunflower seeds combined with wheat bran and oat flakes or the Paan Paan whole meal bread, which is made from wholemeal flour with added grains of soy, linseeds, wheat flakes, barley, oats, corn, kibbled wheatand millet.

Even though Paan Paan has been in operation for less than a year, it has already received rave reviews. The restaurant has become the go to place for both the young and the old. The delicious  variety of bread coupled with the affordable price tag has attracted patrons similar to the manner in which bees are attracted to a honey cove. In an article the Sunday Times named the Paan Paan restaurant as a ‘bread feast’. This seems the most apt way to describe this one of a kind bakery.
